AUDAZ REVISTA
Vos is the easy one
Argentina swapped tu for vos. Courses file that under regional variation and skip it. It is actually the tidier half of the system, and it is the only half Argentines use.
THE WHOLE RULE
Drop the -r, add -s, stress the end
Hablar gives hablas. Comer gives comes. Vivir gives vivis. One line covers all three verb families in the present tense.
The written accent is not decoration. It tells you where the stress goes.
ZERO
No stem changes at all
Spanish stem changes only happen when the stress falls on the stem. Move the stress to the ending and the problem evaporates.
Every e-to-ie and o-to-ue verb you sweated over is regular in the vos present. Poder, querer, pensar, cerrar, contar, volver, sentir, servir.
THREE
Irregulars in the whole present
Only ser, ir and haber break the pattern. Ser gives you sos, and you learn it as a word.
Three verbs in the entire language, against the list you memorised for tu.
SIX OF EIGHT
Irregular commands go regular
Ten becomes tene. Ven becomes veni. Di becomes deci. Haz becomes hace. Pon becomes pone. Sal becomes sali.
To make a vos command, drop the final -r from the infinitive and keep the stress at the end. That is the rule.
THE ONE ODDITY
Go is anda, from andar
The ir command is the honest exception. Argentines sidestep it and use the vos command of andar instead.
Anda a la plaza means go to the square. Learn it as a phrase and you are done.
WHAT DOES NOT MOVE
Half the pronouns stay put
Object and reflexive pronouns stay te. Possessives stay tu and tuyo. Plural is ustedes, so there is no vosotros to learn.
After a preposition it is para vos and con vos. The fused form contigo does not exist in Argentine speech.
THE TRAP
Buenos Aires mostly skips vos in the subjunctive
The Real Academia Espanola builds its voseo tables on the most frequent, unstigmatised Rio de la Plata usage, and leaves the subjunctive voseo out of them entirely.
Negative commands there take the tu subjunctive, while positive ones take vos. The two systems sit side by side in the same conversation. If a course teaches the vos subjunctive as the Argentine rule, it is teaching you Central American usage.
WHY IT SOUNDS ITALIAN
It is the melody, not the grammar
Colantoni and Gurlekian measured it in Bilingualism: Language and Cognition, 2004, volume 7, issue 2, pages 107 to 119. In most Spanish varieties the pitch peak on a word arrives late. In Buenos Aires it arrives early.
Other varieties save early peaks for correcting somebody. So ordinary Buenos Aires speech carries the tune of permanent emphasis to an ear trained elsewhere.
THE TRADE
One pronoun out, hundreds of verbs back
The switch costs you one pronoun and one set of endings. It refunds every stem change, six irregular commands and the whole vosotros paradigm.
Voseo is not slang and not an Argentine invention. It is the older form, kept alive at the far end of the map.
