We measured the untranslatable
Morrina heads every list of untranslatable Spanish words. Two dictionaries and one book corpus say the label is wrong.
SEVEN
The dictionary already translated it
The Real Academia Espanola entry for morrina lists seven Spanish synonyms: nostalgia, anoranza, tristeza, pena, melancolia, musepo and melarchia.
A word with seven synonyms in its own dictionary is not untranslatable.
3 ENTRIES
Morrina is three words, not one
In the Real Academia Galega dictionary, morrina is three separate entries holding five senses between them. Only one of the five is homesickness.
The other four: a rotting body, a layer of grime, drizzle, and a heap of dead plants.
SENSE 4
It also means drizzle
Parece que non, pero a morrina ainda molla ben. It does not look like much, but morrina still soaks you.
That is the Galician dictionary's own example sentence, for the rain.

The list is not one thing
We measured the ten words from our own untranslatable list in the Google Books Spanish corpus. Madrugada is 709 times commoner than empalagar.
Our list gave them the same space and the same promise.
12.053
Madrugada, per million words
The hours after midnight, before dawn. It turns up in the first novel you open, about ten times as often as sobremesa.
Learn this one. It pays you back on page one.
0.017
Empalagar, per million words
When sweetness tips over into too much. At this rate you could read for years and never meet it.
Not a reason to avoid it. A reason to stop treating it as homework.
0.115
And morrina itself?
The rarest word in our comparison. Plain nostalgia is 77 times commoner. Plain miedo, fear, is 740 times commoner.
Fame and frequency are not the same thing.
17.545
The one they always skip
Ilusion means an eager, forward-looking hope. English has no clean single word for it, and it is 153 times commoner than morrina.
Common and genuinely hard to translate. That is the combination worth your time.
THE LIMITS
What this cannot tell you
The corpus counts printed books, not conversation, and it does not read Galician. Frequency answers one question only, which is what you will meet.
A rare word can still carry a culture.
THE VERDICT
Sort them, do not memorise them
Three of the ten are worth studying as vocabulary. The rest are worth knowing as culture, with no obligation to learn them.
