In a series the pictures carry you through a missed line. In stand-up, miss the set-up and the punchline lands on nothing. And the crowd laughs over the last three words. Which are the joke.

Netflix stand-up specials in Spanish

16 of the 42 came out in 2018 alone. Only two have come out since 2023. Most of what you will watch was recorded in 2017 and 2018, so treat the slang as a recording of its year.

Spanish subtitles on. English never.

All six specials carry an English track and a Spanish one. The two from Spain label theirs Spanish (Spain). Reading at native speed with the sound as a guide is reading practice.

3 PASSES

How to study one special

First pass, Spanish subtitles, no pausing. Second pass, pause on every laugh you missed and say the line aloud. Third pass weeks later, subtitles off. The jokes you now catch cold are your progress report.

Keep ten expressions per special, as full sentences. Not a hundred.

THE TEST

Laugh twice in five minutes

Watch the opening with Spanish subtitles. Two real laughs without reading ahead means you are on the right rung. None means drop one. Nobody is watching you.
