TRUE CRIME
We counted 2,422 episodes
Every list of Spanish true crime podcasts tells you to listen. Almost none tell you how long an episode is, or whether the show still exists.
So we pulled the feeds and counted.
9 FEEDS
What we actually measured
Thirteen feeds pulled, nine kept as Spanish-language true crime. For each one we read the length of every episode, the date of every episode, and looked for a transcript.
Measured listening load, not taste.
8 OF 9
You cannot read along
Eight of the nine feeds carry no transcript at all. Only 10 episodes out of 2,422 shipped one, which is 0.4%. Across the seven shows we recommend, the count is zero.
This was the finding we did not expect.
THE CATCH
Apple makes one for you
Since 5 March 2024, Apple Podcasts has generated transcripts automatically, and Spanish was a launch language. It is machine-made, nobody at the show checked it, and it does not leave the app.
Helpful. Not the same as a real transcript.
3.8x
The jump nobody warns you about
A learner podcast episode runs about 22 minutes. Elena en El Pais de los Horrores runs a median of 83 minutes, and 80% of its episodes pass the hour.
That is not a step up. It is a different sport.
18.4 MIN
Start with Territorio Negro
The gentlest real entry point in the genre, and it is not close. Not one episode in its feed passes an hour. Two working crime journalists, speaking in turn instead of over each other.
Radio Spanish is clear by trade.
71%
Leyendas Legendarias is the hard one
A median of 68 minutes, and 71.1% of episodes run over an hour. Three hosts, unscripted, joking across each other. Its own feed files it under comedy first.
Jokes are the last thing you understand.
2024
The famous one is finished
The Duolingo Spanish Podcast is still the most recommended true crime entry point for learners. Its newest episode is dated 29 February 2024.
The archive still plays. Nothing new is coming.
371
Episodes in a single month
One popular show published 371 episodes in December 2025, about 12 a day. Another posts roughly one a day and credits no host. We cut both.
No team records at that rate.
THE TRAP
The best numbers were the wrong ones
The two shows we cut had the most attractive stats in the set. Shortest episodes, only transcripts, most active feed. Sorting by active and frequent finds the fastest publisher, not the best show.
Which is how these lists go wrong.
NO LEVEL
What we will not tell you
We did not listen to all 2,422 episodes, so we are not giving these shows a CEFR level. Everyone else does, and almost nobody has tested it.
Measured load is the honest version.
ONE
Finish one episode
Pick one show from the top of the table, not three from the middle. One finished episode teaches you more than four abandoned ones.
Finishing is the whole skill.
