Your textbook was wrong about tú and usted
Tú is not simply informal. Usted is not simply polite. In most of the Spanish-speaking world that rule does not hold.

Costa Ricans say usted to their dog
In a 2022 study of 132 native speakers across all seven Costa Rican provinces, usted was dominant with strangers, shopkeepers, children and pets.

The figure varies by province. In five of seven provinces usted was also dominant with siblings, and in four provinces with a spouse.
The pronoun your course saved for a bank manager is the one used on a mother.
THE INVERSION
There, tú is the rude one
Many interviewees said they regarded the use of tú as a lack of solidarity. Their words: tú isn't normal, we never use tú here, tú isn't Costa Rican.
Only in Guanacaste did tú win anything, and only with babies, at 60 percent.
WHY
Meaning comes from contrast, not the word
A pronoun only signals respect if choosing it was optional. Where usted is what everyone says to everyone, choosing it signals nothing.
Every country has a default pronoun and a marked one. Which is which changes.
MEDELLÍN
The pronoun follows the passport
233 people picked a pronoun for advertising. Bancolombia got tú at 62.7 percent. Citibank got usted at 67.8 percent. Same business, different pronoun.

SPAIN
Usted went the other way
Children once called their parents usted. After the transition to democracy, tú spread fast. Today usted can read as a comment on someone's age.
It survives in courts, the army, banking and medicine.
THE FIX
Use the pronoun that is used on you
¿Cómo estás? is tú. ¿Cómo está? is usted. Copy it back. This is correct in every Spanish-speaking country and costs no thinking.
If you must speak first with no signal, usted is the safer error.
