Numbers in Spanish: Count From 0 to 1,000 (The Complete Guide)

The short version

Numbers in Spanish follow clear patterns once you learn the first 30. Count uno, dos, tres up to quince (15), then 16 to 29 join into one word like dieciséis and veintiuno. From 30 you just add “y” (and), so 31 is treinta y uno.

  • Memorise 0 to 15 first. Everything else is built from them.
  • From 16 to 29 the words join up: dieciséis, veintiuno.
  • From 30, just add y: treinta y uno (31).
  • Cien is exactly 100; ciento leads into bigger numbers.

Numbers are the unglamorous skill that unlocks real life in Spanish. Prices. Dates. Your bus stop. Your phone number. You will use them on day one in any Spanish-speaking country, and getting them wrong costs you money. Good news: Spanish numbers are mostly logical, and the few weird bits are easy to memorise. Here is the whole system, with the traps marked.

How do you count from 0 to 15 in Spanish?

These first sixteen have no shortcut. You memorise them. Everything else is built from these.

Number Spanish Number Spanish
0 cero 8 ocho
1 uno 9 nueve
2 dos 10 diez
3 tres 11 once
4 cuatro 12 doce
5 cinco 13 trece
6 seis 14 catorce
7 siete 15 quince

Say them out loud daily for a week. They will stick.

What is the pattern from 16 to 29?

Here is where Spanish gets clever. From 16 to 29, the “ten plus unit” idea gets squeezed into a single word. The teens start with dieci- and the twenties start with veinti-.

Number Spanish Number Spanish
16 dieciséis 23 veintitrés
17 diecisiete 24 veinticuatro
18 dieciocho 25 veinticinco
19 diecinueve 26 veintiséis
20 veinte 27 veintisiete
21 veintiuno 28 veintiocho
22 veintidós 29 veintinueve

Notice the pattern. Dieciséis is really diez y seis (ten and six) glued together. Veintiuno is veinte y uno (twenty and one) glued together. The one-word form is the correct, modern spelling.

How do the tens work from 30 to 100?

From 30 upward, the words separate again and you join them with y (and). First, learn the tens.

Number Spanish Example Means
30 treinta treinta y uno 31
40 cuarenta cuarenta y cinco 45
50 cincuenta cincuenta y dos 52
60 sesenta sesenta y siete 67
70 setenta setenta y ocho 78
80 ochenta ochenta y ocho 88
90 noventa noventa y nueve 99
100 cien exactly 100

One rule covers every number from 31 to 99: tens word + y + unit word.

The little word y only ever sits between the tens and the units. You say ciento cincuenta for 150, never “ciento y cincuenta.” Get this one rule right and your numbers instantly sound native.

Why does 100 change to “ciento”?

This trips up every beginner. Cien means exactly 100. The moment you add anything to it, it becomes ciento. So 100 is cien, 101 is ciento uno, 150 is ciento cincuenta, and 199 is ciento noventa y nueve. Notice there is no y straight after ciento.

How do you count by hundreds to 1,000?

The hundreds have their own forms, and a few are irregular. Watch 500, 700, and 900.

Number Spanish Number Spanish
100 cien 600 seiscientos
200 doscientos 700 setecientos
300 trescientos 800 ochocientos
400 cuatrocientos 900 novecientos
500 quinientos 1,000 mil

So 765 is setecientos sesenta y cinco. You read it left to right, exactly like English: seven hundred, sixty, and five. One more rule: the hundreds agree with gender. Doscientos libros (two hundred books) but doscientas casas (two hundred houses), because casa is feminine.

What is the one rule about “uno” everyone forgets?

Uno (one) drops its “o” before a masculine noun. It becomes un. So it is un libro (one book), not “uno libro,” and una mesa (one table), because mesa is feminine. This carries through to bigger numbers: 21 books is veintiún libros with an accent, and 21 tables is veintiuna mesas.

If gender rules are still fuzzy, our Spanish for beginners complete guide walks through masculine and feminine nouns from scratch.

How do you say prices, years, and phone numbers?

This is where numbers earn their keep.

  • Prices. Spanish uses a comma where English uses a decimal point. So €3,50 is tres euros con cincuenta or simply tres cincuenta. A thousand is written with a full stop: 1.000.
  • Years. You say the whole number, not pairs of digits. 2026 is dos mil veintiséis, never “twenty twenty-six.”
  • Phone numbers. Spanish speakers usually group digits in pairs. A number like 612 345 678 is often read as seis, doce, treinta y cuatro, cincuenta y seis, setenta y ocho.

Telling the time uses numbers constantly too. Once your counting is solid, lock in the clock with our guide to telling time in Spanish.

How can I practise numbers so they stick?

Drills beat memorising lists. Try these for one week.

  • Read every price out loud. In a shop, on a menu, on a receipt. Say the number in Spanish before you pay.
  • Say your phone number daily. In pairs, like a local.
  • Count the stairs, the cars, the coffees. Background counting builds speed without effort.
  • Pair numbers with the calendar. Practise dates alongside the days of the week in Spanish so they reinforce each other.

Numbers are a muscle. Use them every day and they get fast. Skip them and they vanish.

Frequently asked questions

How do you say 21 in Spanish?

Veintiuno, written as one word. Before a masculine noun it shortens to veintiún (with an accent), as in veintiún libros (21 books).

What is the difference between “cien” and “ciento”?

Cien means exactly 100 and stands alone. Ciento is used when 100 leads into a larger number, like ciento cincuenta (150).

Do Spanish numbers change for gender?

Uno and the hundreds do. Un libro (masculine) versus una mesa (feminine), and doscientos versus doscientas. The rest of the numbers stay the same.

Why is 16 written as one word?

Numbers from 16 to 29 glue the parts together in modern spelling. Dieciséis is diez y seis (ten and six) combined into one word.

How do you say years in Spanish?

Say the full number. 2026 is dos mil veintiséis, not “twenty twenty-six.”
